Relief
Too often individuals find themselves in immediate need of resources and support to meet their basic care needs. Genuine Concern For Others, Inc. aims to implement relief projects for the poor and disadvantaged that focus on basic care needs and the potential means to sustain them.
Loads of Love Loads of Love is a way of caring for people who are struggling financially by assisting them launder their own clothes. Loads of Love serves people that are living on the streets, in vehicles, in shelters or living with multiple families in a single family dwelling due to financial hardship. People served meet the definition of someone without a home, are food insecure and live in poverty. What Occurs? Laundry assistance is provided free of charge through the purchase of “Laundry Cards” for individuals to use at card-operated laundromats, and via monthly group events at local laundromats. Laundry Cards are provided by volunteers to people at parks and other community locations. Group events are regularly scheduled by caring community volunteers that arrive with the resources needed to launder items. Volunteers also focus on building relationships and provide a human connection often not experienced by those who live in poverty. Once trust is developed, volunteers are able to offer participants additional resources to meet other life needs. 100% of the donations for this project support the costs of laundering clothes. Food For The Kitchenless FFTK is a way of caring for people that do not have the means to cook or store food and are struggling financially. Beyond limited finances to purchase food, not having a “kitchen” presents a unique need that is unmet by the local foodbank, food pantries and food distribution sites. The most food insecure people in our communities are the houseless that don’t have cooking, storage or refrigeration capabilities. People served meet the definition of someone without a home, are food insecure and live in poverty; most are chronically homeless. Food and beverage items that can be carried in a backpack, cart or vehicle are required to meet this critical need. Nonperishable food items, food that can go unspoiled for several days, individually wrapped in “one serving” sizes are ideal. Examples of needed items are tuna or chicken salad with crackers, applesauce or fruit squeeze pouches, bars (protein, energy cereal, granola), fruit juices in squeeze pouches or boxes, and peanut butter or cheese crackers. Canned food should be small in size and have pull-top lids. Protein items are a priority. Items can be purchased at Dollar Tree, Costco or Amazon. Please no large-sized or bulk items, and no glass containers. Food donations can be brought to Pershing Park on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. What Occurs? Volunteers assemble bags of food and beverage items every Monday evening. The bags are distributed free of charge by volunteers weekly to people at regularly scheduled events, parks and other community locations. Food distribution typically occurs in concert with other needed services and community partners. Ongoing funds are needed to pay for the costs of food and beverages. Volunteer opportunities are available. Donate Now! Meal Sharing and Neighbors Without Homes GCFO volunteers have joined volunteers from local community groups to provide a dinner meal to our neighbors without homes at Pershing Park on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. Beyond a meal our neighbors without homes can benefit from clothing donations, blankets, sleeping bags and toiletries. These items need to be new or in excellent condition. Of course, we are pleased to accept monetary donations to support the project. 100% of the donations for this project support the cost of meals and necessities. Donate Now! Food And Clothing Drives
Volunteers of Genuine Concern For Others have successfully coordinated food and/or clothing drives to meet the immediate needs of low-income families and local Santa Barbara human service agencies serving disadvantaged populations. Successful food and clothing drives require participation from numerous volunteers willing to give up some of their valuable time to provide for others in need. Even a couple hours of time committed to a project by any one individual, when coupled with commitments from other volunteers, can have amazing results. A special thanks to the many, generous community members who donate food and clothing to assist our community need. You’re Wonderful. "Love cannot remain by itself; it has no meaning.
